Hotel rwanda

Before this happened all the countries seemed to have a fine relation with Rwanda. But when Rwanda's need was dire, they turned their backs. The U.N people took out all the foreign nationals and went away. even the U.N left this shows how selfish we are. How are we different from animals? Do we actually deserve what we get? Is this what humanity has come to?

The Scramble for Africa

France = Blue
Great Britain = Red
Germany=Black
Belgium=Yellow
Spain=Orange
Netherlands=Purple
Portugal=Green

In our scramble for Africa session it could be argued that Great Britain and France won. This because they had strategic land as well as lots of land.

The losers would be either Belgium or spain because they had very few strategic areas and very barely any squares of land.

I noticed that during the game we never thought of what Africans might want, we just got what we wanted. Just like that when imperialism occured in Africa no one cared what the Africans wanted. So the real winners were the Europeans and the real losers were the Africans!

A Thought Provoking Step in Africa

The main visual elements are obviously the foot step and the shape of Africa. Also the parched land in the area of the footstep is a visual element.
The issue this picture represents is the effect of European imperialism on Africa. It has a negative attitude towards imperialism. The footstep in Europe's footprint. It shows that imperialism has left left a permanent mark on Africa. Up to this point the picture gives no view of imperialism. What makes it negative is the parched land inside the footprint. The parched land shows that the Europeans have taken every thing away from them. Their natural resources, traditions, and religions. As nothing is left behind the land is parched, barren, wasteland. The author also chose black as the color for Africa. This was to show the racist discrimination in Europe. Africa was called by the Europeans the dark land.
If I were to emphasize to meaning of this I would make more footprints with parched land to show that the effect was even worse.
But in my own view I would not agree with the message the picture conveys. Their were also some countries in Africa which experienced a positive side of imperialism. Like my research country, Tanzania which experienced a overall positive side of imperialism.

MR. HeLP

MR. HeLP is a good way to remember the five themes of geography.

Movement- how people, goods or ideas move from one place to another.

"spinning into darkness" /They move from Africa to London

Region- Group of locations that have something in common.

in school /Sade and Mariam are both from africa

Human Environmental Interaction - how we impact the environment, how it impacts us

in front of building /colder climate in London affects them because they are used to be in warmer climate

Location - absolute or relative point of station

throughout the time they are in london /London

Place - what it is like in a give place

/school in Nigeria very strict, not like school in London

Imperialism in art

The main visual elements are the man with the top hat and the arms grabbing the different countries.
The cartoon shows the imperialism england is doing. It is trying to show that england has its hands full in imperialism. The author obviously feels negatively about what England is doing. It is shown by the top hat which is a symbol of greed and too much wealth. The artist could have made the person ugly to show the evil. The contrast is great as your eyes immediately center in on the man with the hat. Repetition is also used effectively with the multiple arms. Although there is no alignment it seems as it is not required.

Does violence lead to more violence

I agree that violence leads to more violence. A example from Julius Caesar is when the conspirators kill Caesar. Soon people were chase them with knifes. Then a whole war started! A real world example is WW2 . Once Germany stared to conquer a whole war started.

A good leader thinks first about his/her people, then about himself/herself. Take Mahatma Gandhi for example. He cared about his country so much that he barely attended to his personal needs. A good leader should not be arrogant at all. He/she should be a idol for people. Also she/he should take other peoples suggestions.

Some leaders in our school are:
Lucas Hille because he is not arrogant, he is not shy, and he is a good talker.

Joel Witt because he can get the job done.

Farah Weanenara because she takes peoples suggestions as a slams rep.

I will add more to the list as I see more leaders.

Humanities; challenged by it

The outsiders final S.S was challenging for me. The main reason was because I was not prepared. I had no notes or no pages bookmarked. So when we had the S.S I barely talked. Next time I will remember to prepare and check my agenda. We have another S.S coming up soon so this time I will do better.

Humanities; Proud of it

The piece I am proud of is my expository piece. This is because my last two writing pieces were not so good and I scored low points on them. On the expository piece my writing quality was much better. Also many other people scored low on this as they thought it was a summary of their museum display instead of a summary of their topic. Overall I am proud of the writing piece because of the effort I put in it .

Here is the piece:

Importance of Coal and Steam during the I.R

In the Industrial Revolution there were two main resources, that without there would be no progress. These were coal and steam. Each of these had huge importance in the I.R.

The arguably the most important invention during the I.R was steam power. Steam power was first captured by Thomas Savery. He made the first engine in 1698. This first engine was very basic It had no moving parts and worked on a vacuum system. Also it was very weak and barely made any power. It was called a miners friend, as the inventor intended it to pump water out of mines. Next was Thomas Newcomen’s engine. Although this was more powerful it consumed huge amounts of coal and could only be used to pump out water from coal mines. Finally in 1878 a engine came that would change the ways of the I.R for ever. It was a revolutionary engine invented by James Watt. This engine was more powerful and consumed less coal. But mainly it was the rotary movement of this engine that allowed it to be used it mills and factories. This engine also led to the development of the train.

Coal was the fuel for the I.R. Before the invention of the steam engine if coal reserve was found, it could not be exploited very far. If miners went deep there would be too much water. After the invention though miners could go a lot deeper. But soon they were confronted by another problem. The gases found in the deeper parts were sometimes explosive. The lanterns used by miners would ignite and explode the gases. Many men died like this until William Reid Clanny devised a safety lamp. This would detect any gases. Coal was used to power steam engines and later on trains. The demand for coal was huge. Coal was mined for many centuries from then until other alternatives came, although mining continues today.

W.O.W; worth it?

W.O.W is important enough to skip a week of our 8th grade education. I came up with three
reasons to support my opinion.

The first one is to see India's diversity. We live in Delhi and there we learn something about India. But there is more to India than the shopping malls, acsa, and our homes. There are also beautiful mountains, raging rivers and a lot of culture. If we are living and going to school in India it is important to learn about India.

The second reason is to meet new people and make new friends. Before W.O.W Shuk and I knew each other but we did not get along very well. Over W.O.W I learnt that there was some good in him and we dont fight now and get along pretty well.

Thirdly, it is to grow a apprecition for the nature around us. The first time I saw the place it was beautiful. Also the gushing white water was a worth a postcard .I just grew a larger appreciation for nature.

A.E.S's moto is ENTER TO LEARN, LEAVE TO SERVE. This mean that learning is more than sitting in class. A.E.S wants us to be better and more citizens .By having W.O.W this is what A.E.S is doing.

Assessing my old goals and making new ones

My main goal I wanted to archive was to improve my writing. I think I have got better at that after looking at my I.R writing grades. My first two writing grade were pretty bad but then my next one was a lot better. Finally my last grade for the expository piece was very good. As for the grammar improvement

My main goal is still to improve my writing as their is still space for improvement their.

Also my grammar goal still remains as we have not consultated that yet in class.

If I were to think of a third goal it would to improve my teamwork ability. For the I.R display I got a partner who I didn't like very much. So I had some arguments with that person and in the end we got a bad grade.

The first rotary steam engine is invented!

Invention to revolutionize the Industrial Revolution.

Today on the 18th of September 1878 the first Rotary Steam Engine has been invented by James Watt in the Great Britain . The steam engine can now be used to power all mills and factories that previously ran on the weaker source of water power. John Dope, the owner of the Dope Textile Mills, believes that it is a great invention. “ This will change the efficiency of all factories. It is inventions like these that are need to move the Industrial Revolution forward. I have already ordered this great machine for my factory!” The coal mining companies are also happier because they have got steam engines that use less coal.

The Watt steam engine, unlike the ones that Thomas Savery or Newcomen invented, makes a rotary action. This is what enables the engine to be used in mills. Also the Watt steam engine has a separate cooling chamber which allows the main cylinder to stay hot all the time. This generates more power as well as making it less coal guzzling. It gives a horse power almost double the double of that provided by the Newcomen Engine. Users will have a double benefit.

Inventor James Watt is a Instrument maker in the University of Glasgow. He is very proud to release his invention. “ I first tried to produce this engine 9 ½ years ago. Unfortunately we went bankrupt and I had to work as a surveyor for 8 years. Then I formed a partnership with Matthew Boulton and successfully manufactured the engine. I am very happy today”

One the other side, the owner of a Cottage Industry called Slow, and Slow is very unhappy. Mr. Oldtech stated “ if machines can replace man then why was man ever created.” The cottage industries are slowly and slowly vanishing due to the much more efficient machines. Mr. Oldtech was disappointed with the start of the I.R in the beginning and is even more unhappy today. He fears he must shut down his 100 year old company.

Note: Mr. Oldtech and John Dope and their companies are purely fictitious. Any resemblance is to be considered purely coincidental.

1870 stock market

I was very successful in the game. In fact I had the highest amount of money in our class. I did not use specific strategy besides my basic knowledge. I got a lot of shares of the Great Northern Railway because I new that they went up at that time

Buy low and sell high

This is the one that I used. I got 10 shares of the Great Northern Railway when it was the lowest at $ 4 . Then I sold every thing else and got more Great Northern Railways shares. Then in the end the shares turned out to be real high and I made a lot money.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I don't agree with this because this is exactly what I did and I made a lot of many of it. Maybe it could be sheer luck but for this game putting all your eggs in one basket worked very well.

Dairy of James Watt

Dairy of James Watt

Date: January 16, 1867

Today was by far the worst day in my life. After all the effort I went through to acquire my patents and my partnership I have got bankrupt. I first came up with my first plan for a steam engine in 1865. Oh, that was a great day. Then I struggled to find capital to start the production of a full scale steam engine. When I managed to do that, yet another problem arose. The workers in John’s factory were more like blacksmiths than mechanics. They could not build to the preciseness required to produce a steam engine. The problem was with the piston and cylinder. Then there was a patent which cost me almost all my money. Now, I have none of it left.

I have been offered a job as a surveyor and the pay is very poor. Still it is the best job available. I have heard that there is a German architect who has figured a way to make precise drilling. If this is true then I can form another partnership with someone and build my steam engines again. That is if any one agrees to buy my patents

As for now I must work as a surveyor.

Date: March 27, !870

Work as a surveyor is very hard and boring. No one yet has offered to buy the patents for steam engine. Imagine how much more advanced factories would be with my improved steam engine. I am in total despair!

Date April 20, 1875

Today a great thing has happened. The owner of the Soho Foundry, Matthew Boulton, has offered to buy my patents. This means after eight painful years I can finally create my steam engine. Oh this is unbelievable!

An Interview with James Watt

Born on 19th of January, 1736, James Watt is by far one of the most important people of the Industrial Revolution. Without his famous invention, the steam engine, there would have not been an I.R until electricity would be discovered. That would be a huge delay!
Today on the 18th of August, 1989 at the age of 83, he has joined in an interview.

How was your childhood?
“I was born in Scotland. I barely went to school and most of the time my mother would home tutor me. I was great at math while I performed very poorly in language. At seventeen my mother died and my father was very ill. At this point I left to study in U.K and then it all started!”
Moving on, how did the idea of a steam powered engine come to your mind?
“Actually I had an instrument shop at the University of Glasgow. Through this, I got introduced to a professor called John Robinson and he became my friend. Then one day while he was showing me about steam, I thought it was a great source of power. So soon I was experimenting with steam power to make an engine.”
After that how many trails did it take you to get a working model?
“Ooh, I would say well over fifty. My first attempt was a huge failure. It barely worked, forget powering anything! After many failures, at last I had a working engine!”
And then?
“Don’t ask, it was like torture! I had the plans for the production of a full scale engine and formed a partnership with a friend of mine who owned an iron working company .But to my disappointment the workers at the factory were blacksmiths and could not produce the quality needed. The end product was far from desired and soon we got bankrupt. For the next eight whole years I had to take up employment as a surveyor. Then Matthew Button, the owner of a famous foundry, bought my patent rights and I formed a partnership with him. This time we got the golden taste of success finally. At first these engines were used to pump water out of mines but after some modification it was used power all sorts of machines in the Industrial revolution.”
After retirement what did you do?
“I couldn’t leave inventing so I continued that at my house. I made some machines like the steam mangle, a device for copying letters, and much more.”
You are considered an important and respectful person in the I.R. Your reaction?
“I think I deserved the fame and respect after all my hard work and struggles. Overall I am very satisfied with my life!”
Thank you for coming to our interview!
“It was my pleasure!”

Mid term goals

1.My main goal was to add more detail and description in my writing.

I think I got a lot better at this. This is mainly because of two reasons. One is that my teacher last year did not focus a lot on creative writing. This year writing is both fun and intense in Mr. Coyle's
class. Another reason is now I want to write and improve at it unlike last year.

2.The other goal was to improve my conventions.

So far we have not done grammar yet but I still believe that I will get better at that!

Benifits and disadvantages of the I.R

When the Industrial Revlution came, it got many benifits and disadvantages with it.

One benifit was the employment. Many poor people got jobs during the I.R. Also many products where mass produced. Items where more eaasily available. A lot of products became affordable due to mass production. Many new inventions at this time helped make work and life easier. The lives of people were more organized because they were regulated by clocks

A major disadvantage was that children where employed. They risked death and injury every day. Also in many places whole families were employed while only the father was paid. The people who worked on cottage industries all lost there jobs as they could compete with the commodities of factories. As the need for coal rose, the mines went deeper and deeper. These parts contained explosive gases and many workers would die when these gases ignited.
The I.R made life harder and easier at the same time.

Factory Game day 2

Today was Day two in the factory game. We decided that Coner's "Hursh" doll was the best. Hursh was a handicaped cow who had a stub for one leg and a twisted nose. When I passed my eyes over him, to me it looked like a evil doll. To start with Mr. Colye named Sabie the manager. We were diveded into three groups. I joined the assembly group. After lots of hard work, mutiny attempts, and screaming, we got 68 dolls. The main difference from last time was that we used assembly and each had a specialization. this made us go a lot faster. Also unlike last time we were all doing the same dolls, so as time passed we became experts in our areas. It was just like a factory.

Factory Game Day 1

As I got my paper, I rushed to cut the shapes out. As my half mangled shapes fell on the table I quickly attempted to arrange them into a shape. My original intention was Claud from South Park but too many pieces were left. I tried many other opions like a sun, a bear and etc. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes to 1/3 hours. Seeing the severe shortage of time, I quickly arrange a face. In a desperate attempt to use the remianing pieces, I glued them all in one corner and color black over it to represnt the hair. Finally my messy masterpiece was done!!! When everyone was done Mr. Coyle put them all on the board and belive me, there were all sorts of shapes. With a quick glance at the board I could tell that mine was far from the best.

Roller Coaster

As the cart climbed what seemed like a perpetual lenth of track with the monotonous ket ket ket ... sound. .Suddenly the cart stopped in a deadly silence, I wished I had stayed at the arcade instead of coming here. Then I heard the front most passengers scream and the cart zoomed down. I was sqeezed with un-imagenable pressure as the kinetic energy of the cart increased rapidly. Soon I was lurched forward and the sour bile in the back of my throat came rushing in my mouth as the cart suddenly changed it's course upwards. I knew the potenial energy was building up again.

My Gang

My gang would be my good friends .My gang consisting of Barath, Raag, Varun, Vishal, and Shuk are all very humorous and joyful people. Most of us have been great friends since 1st or 2nd grade. We are all part of the " gang" becuase we are all friendly and carefree. Besides while in class, none of us are ever serious. Every one else finds us as strange and this keeps even closer together. When ever I need any help I can always count on my friends. Unfortuanatly 3 of the 6 of us are leaving this year and I am sure that will hit hard.

Fruit Roll up

The sour and sweet smell entered my nose as I rip open my packet greedily. The blue and purple color were so bright and tempting. As a pulled out sticky fruit roll from the crinkled wraper yet another translucent wraper coated the roll. I impatiently pull out the cellophane as the saliva started to collect in my mouth and finally the prize stood before me unwraped. The moment it touched my mouth the sour taste got enfused in my taste buds.

Necessity is the mother of invention

I think the saying necessity is the mother of invention means that when something is needed it is created or invented. Take the light bulb. Before Thomas Edison invented the light bulb there was a great need for it. People could only work with a oil lamp which generated heat and smoke and required you to fill it with oil. This was too inconvenient and there was a NECESSITY for a new INVENTION. Thus this necessity caused or mothered the new invention. Now lets face it, human are never happy with what they have and then these necessities turn into luxuries. But what ever these level of the necessity may be, it always leads to inventions!sd!

feed back August 13-17

I learn stuff best kinesthetic . When I see videos or listen I cannot concentrate. But if you get a sheet to complete you have to finish it. Also, when you watch a movie or listen you have to take notes so you study for tests. If you do a work sheet you can study straight from it.

Feed back August 6-10

-I think one major highlight was meeting with my friends after almost two whole months. Also I was excited to meet my new teachers and to see whether they were good or bad.
- I was glad to now that my
teacher was Mr. Coyle because my sister had told me he was the best teacher. Also I found the class very interesting because we were always doing something new.
-My major goal is to improve my writing by adding description. I also want to improve my grammar and spelling because that was always a weakness of mine.
